Free data removal in the UK: free vs cheapest paid services compared

Everything a data removal service does, you're legally allowed to do yourself for free. The question is whether your time is worth more than the subscription. Here's an honest comparison of the free and cheap options for UK residents.

Quick answer
  • Free and effective: open register opt-out, TPS, MPS, and erasure letters to the sites that bother you most.
  • Free tools: Optery's free scan (US sites), DeleteMe's DIY guides, Ceaselist's letter generator.
  • Cheapest paid with UK coverage: Ceaselist at £29 a year. Cheapest US-focused: EasyOptOuts at about $20 a year.

The free UK checklist

  1. Opt out of the open register, five minutes, free.
  2. Register with the TPS and MPS.
  3. Remove yourself from 192.com and other people-search sites.
  4. Object to the credit reference agencies' marketing.
  5. Send an erasure letter to each data broker you find, and chase the ones that ignore you.
  6. Put a reminder in your calendar to repeat in three to six months.

When paying makes sense

Steps 1 to 4 are quick. Step 5 is the hard part: hundreds of brokers, each with its own address and one-month clock, and many that only answer after a reminder. If you'd rather spend the time elsewhere, that's what a service is for. If you only care about a handful of sites, stay free.

Questions people ask

Is there a free data removal service in the UK?

There's no free service that keeps removing you from hundreds of brokers. The free route is doing it yourself: every UK GDPR request is free, and the open register, TPS and MPS opt-outs cost nothing. Free tools such as Optery's scan or Ceaselist's letter generator help you do it.

Is there a free version of Incogni?

No. Incogni has paid plans only, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Is there a free version of DeleteMe?

DeleteMe offers free do-it-yourself opt-out guides but no free removal plan.

What is the cheapest data removal service?

Among US services EasyOptOuts is often cited as the cheapest, at about $20 a year, but it focuses on US sites. For UK and EEA residents, Ceaselist is £29 a year and works under UK GDPR.

Is a one-time data removal worth it?

It helps briefly, but brokers re-acquire data from new lists within months. A one-off clean-up works best paired with the open register opt-out and a repeat every few months.

Want this done for you? Ceaselist sends erasure requests to 668 data brokers as your authorised agent, chases the legal deadlines and prepares an ICO complaint when a broker ignores the law. £29 a year or £3.99 a month, full refund within 30 days.
